The so called "world's largest democracy"
arrested 1300 people protesting the arrest of a man on a hunger strike against a new anti-corruption law. There are certainly times when governments need to step in and curb protests...but arresting people for non-violent protest..arresting them for in essence not eating...thats pretty hard line. The law the original protester was protesting against made accepting a bribe a criminal offense, however it excluded high level government officals.
