Quick Hobbit 2 review

Thumbs up. Didnt follow the books storyline at all (for example gandalf never goes 1-1 with sauron in any of the books and there isnt a dwarf-elf romance in the books) but regardless I dont think my interest wavered at all during the 3 hours. Its clear to me the directors learned a lot from LotR(which I hated) and have refined their art even more with these Hobbit movies. Looks like the animators had a lot of fun making smaug..the last like 45 minutes is filled with him chasing the dwarves through the lonely mountain VERY reminiscent of the Scooby Doo cliche where they run through various doors all on the same floor. I'm in a funny spot with this movie- the Hobbit was HUGE for me as a kid, but I never read the book. I was addicted to the radio drama via books on tape. The first program I ever wrote was a choose your own adventure Hobbit game for the Apple. I guess the story is good where ever you get it, though again..these movies are leaving the actual story behind and making up a new one.

US WWII vets are war criminals

At least the ones serving the pacific front. Just finished watching the anime movie Graveyard of the Fireflies which is a story about the US firebombing urban housing areas on mainland japan, aka civilian targets, in WW2. Hiroshima and Nagasaki had to happen because they ended wars, current and potential and saved lives. The target areas were business districts, a civilian target but not targeting civilians per say. Creating firestorms out of wood houses in Japanese urban population areas and indiscriminately killing in one of the most horrible ways possible (burns suck) 100,000s of women and children (since all the man were out at war) is barbaric. As far as I know Japan never attack a US civilian target, and it certainly had the opportunity. I'm thankful most WW2 vets arnt around any more..I dont generally enjoying kicking old people in the nutz.

What I'm Playing 11/30

Playing :

Xcom Enemy Within :: was on sale for Black Friday so I picked it up. The original game sat unplayed like all year on my desktop (got it for 5 bucks on sale a while ago)..I had heard they made it into a FPS but after watching some great lets play videos it clearly is a very fun game very much in line with the original 90s classic. 2K games did right by Xcom..thats not to say I forgive them for civ5 or the GTA series.

Sots The Pit Gold :: Another game bought on sale that sat on my desktop unplayed for the longest time. These developers epically blew their AAA debut but The Pit is a great little scifi rougelike. Its an "old school" game designed to do everything it can to defeat the player..there are 45 levels and I rarely make it past 10.

Pandora First contact :: Beta tested this game and wasnt going to buy it, but the Beta tester discount was too good to say no to. I love me cheap games. This is a beautiful "Civ in space" game that may be a real winner in the future if the devs fill in the empty but pretty shell the game is now with content.

Looking to Play ::

Hearthstone :: I've been watching a lot of lets plays for Blizzards card gambling game  "Hearthstone". Its an evil evil game that will make Blizzard lots of ill gotten gains 1 dollar at a time from their 10 million customers. I really want to hate it..but it looks fun. You can play without paying $$ and earn enough winnings to keep playing..god its evil. Blizzards stupid 15 different levels of security features on players account have been keeping me from using my account...hopefully customer service will be able to help me without a DNA test.

Watching : Downloaded Seasons 11,12,13 of South Park. Always a great laugh. downloaded the anime historical drama "Graveyard of the Fireflies", which is a really depressing movie about the firebombing of Japanese cities by the US in WW2 as seen through 2 homeless children. Cant seem to turn on the internet without tripping over stories about the US killing 100,000+  random civilian in some foreign county we have no business being in. Oh NO Japan has claimed some pissy 1 mile island in the pacific! Lets slaughter 100s of innocent families with FIRE so they die in the most horrible prolonged way imaginable!

Obama: Turkeys pardoned 10 vs non violent Humans 11

This story just sums up Americans for me. The justice system that everyone feels is broken in sucking the life out of 100,000 people plus their families. Turkeys need to be abused and stuffed with food to get to that weight. The thanksgiving story is bad history. The president that got elected to change things doing more of the same. The American public who isnt outraged at how hurtful this hypocrisy must be for the families of (mostly inappropriately and unproductively) incarcerated Americans.

It seems like such a nice, cute little ceremony. But things stop being cute in the face of blatant hypocrisy. These ceremonies of light become a reminder to those of us with any values whatsoever how far we've fallen. And how America will eat the cake whether its our birthday or not.

Where culture and faith intersect with religion

My mother writes me on Facebook all the time suggesting I shouldn't be publicly critical of the Jews and Israel. She misunderstands; I'm criticizing society for mistaking the mental illness of addiction as faith. Faith is critical component to creating good moral citizens and a huge part of what is missing in today society. I mean philosophical faith aka spirituality- not dogmatic fervor. My issue is with the culturally, human develop dogma that taints religion. Dont get me wrong,  religion isnt all bad, its just being misused. Religion is an expression of culture; a tool we use to teach people how to behave in society. It is largely meant for CHILDREN and is suppose to fall away to great philosophy musing during adulthood where most people dont need the fear of internal damnation to be reminded to not steal or rape your neighbors goat. Religion is also of the past. It is another word for tradition. It is a list of things a community has done before in order to get closer to god but it is certainly not the only path available. Religion is not divinely inspired - its what worked for a community in the past. The old "well thats how my father did it, and my father before him so it must be right" routine. When the orthodox say "this is how god wants us to live" I am reminded of the robot who keeps performing the motions of a task, regardless of whether the purpose of that task has been completed, because no one has come around and given the robot new instructions. The purpose of life is not to pay congressional dues in order to sit year after year reading the same child's parable over and over. No higher being wants you to live your life based on 3000yo standards. If you think living like that helps you get closer to god, fine, its a good thing to want higher understanding. But to say what works for you is everyone needs to act, including your children, is totally selfish. As if your mold is the only mold for the key to infinite wisdom. There are kids out there who you can definitely say were born orthodox. And there are kids being pressed by virtue of their parents closed minded self centered ego, or in the name of tradition, onto a path to god that doesnt work for them.

Religion is not the same as faith or cultural tradition. It is a tool to help people get a leg up on their spiritual journey. People who need it as crutch to live their adult lives should be given their space and their peace, but not treated as equals because they are psychologically missing something that lets healthy people have spirituality and live in the present. They are like addicts, using dogma to fill a missing hole like meth fills in for missing chemicals. The addiction may not be their fault - they could be a product of cultural brainwashing. And that is the main reason we can not be accepting of this lifestyle. Cycle of addiction runs in families and communities. The more we accept them the more likely the children of these people will emulate their behavior and suffer the same spiritual deformity.(and by that I mean people who pass on the idea that their ritual is the only spiritual answer and allow no others in their home)

Am I missing a zero somewhere?

Interesting article over on the libertarian news website. I dont agree with everything there but apparently it would cost 6 trillion dollars for the government to give every American 20K/year to cover living expense. And thats about how much we bring in with our pathetically low taxes. If we raised taxes on the wealth horders we could cover this and still have a budget to play with. 20k isnt much but since it does include babies and 100yos..I think it would be big net gain in quality of living for the majority. More people could escape the fight for basic survive and take a ride on that land of opportunity bus the rich are always talking about.

My visit with the God of Abraham

Last night I had a really vivid dream. I often have complicated "real feeling" dreams but this one really felt like it was me..just somewhere else. It started out with me teaching scuba diving lessons at some huge stone, square pillar thing in the middle of the ocean. There was another scuba group there and they were misbehaving somehow though I dont remember now what they were doing. I think it was something destructive to the coral. Anyhow I decided to go and complain to the owner of that scuba club, who lived in a giant overturned ark and turned out to be a Jewish Rabbi. Healthy-skinny, white American jewish young-ish man with a long will trimmed black beard short black hair and a skullcap. The inside of his arc-house has all well polished wood, gold candelsticks, large rooms with vaulted ceiling far from the floor. He invited us in and we went to his study where he listened to my complaint and said he didnt manage the club actively and I'd have to take it up with the guys misbehaving. So he walked us back to the door (where we passed the bedroom of an ex-girlfriend of mine who was apparently staying with this guy) and before I left I told him, with the purpose of a 1-uping him, I was also a Rabbi and could sing Hebrew. The huge vaulted ceiling had impressed me with their acoustic potential (which I remember saying to myself in the dream) and I belted out the most beautiful heartbreaking version of the prayer over the wine I've ever heard, which was amplified and echo'd by the wooding ceilings. This is the really vivid part of the dream. I can still remember how melodic I sung. At some point my voice was hijacked and the voice singing became feminine and even more lovely and I got the impression that it was coming from the ceiling itself. At which point the Rabbi said "You realize we we could really use a beautiful voice like that in our congregation, and I said "you realize we are destine to be lifelong enemies?" This was over the scuba diving issue..and I didnt think of him as a god at the time..but I remember thinking about the voices sing back in terms of angels at the time. The Rabbi smiled sadly and let us out. And that was the end of the dream.

I am thinking the Rabbi was the Jewish God and the feminizing voice was the angels in Heaven singing back at me. I didnt realize in the dream but the prayer over the wine starts with a blessing about how great god is..so I was trying to one-up this God by blessing him and telling him he is great? Prob thought I was a idiot.

Tea party policy causing Florida sinkholes

A couple interesting articles in the Tampa Bay times about how Florida Governor Ricks Scott's campaign promise to deregulate environmental protections have born fruit. First, remember those sinkholes eats up peoples homes? Ya..apparently that is due to overuse of the ground water by farmers. Business get a permit to pump X gallons of water from the underground aquifer and ever since Rick Scott replaced the heads of the agencies who monitor and enforce violation, its really been more about gentle suggestions and asking nicely rather than the fines that are supposed to be levied on violators. There is another story in South Florida about farmers overusing water resources to fight tree diseases, which apparently has no scientific backing whatsoever, to which the State replied we cant fine them because "they were well intended". And of course the farmers have kept overusing even after being told nicely not to since they know the regulators are in their pocket. And then there is this wonderful story about a company called Moasic using millions of gallons of aquifer water to dilute the pollution it spills into the waterways to get around pollution laws.

Regulatory bodies really need to be independent of whoever is governor and the politics of the day.

State wants stability regardless of quality of service

The Huffington post is doing a great series of articles on Youth "facilities" in Florida. My take on this is it doesn't work to privatize jobs no one wants to do and when you do you get so few applicants you are stuck with the very few who apply. Florida is stuck saying we need these kids housed and fed en mass (forget rehabilitated), but taxpayers wont let the State do it cause that looks like "more government" and only a few people want this job, because it requires all sorts of things regular business want nothing to do with. These private businesses who manage the bear minimums become too big to fail in their respective communities since no one else wants/is equipped to do the job.

All I can say is that I've been in an American court room where a judge commit a child to one of these private institutions based on the written advice of a doctor from another private institution, while not providing any competent legal council to argue the child's desire not to be incarcerated. Oh and then there was the judge in Pennsylvania caught doing this for $$.. and the prescription drug companies getting in on this jailing game too

So how do you fire someone managing the care for 40,000 kids ?

Jail doesnt help anyone except the jail companies and the people they spread the wealth too(doctors, lawyers, cops). Policing is a basic function of government and need to be brought back under the pubic umbrella were there is more transparency and better methods to promote change than all or nothing contract/no contract.

No games for old men (on the ps3)

In order to see how the other half (console gamers) lives I went out and picked up a ps3 and a couple games that I thought might interest me. I purposely avoided gratuitously violent games like GTA or Call of Duty.

I have 26 games currently uploaded from Steam on my computer and of those 4 involve some of sort of personal humaniod avatar punching/hitting casting at etc a humanoid. And of those 4 only one is semi realistic and the other 3 are cartoon-like/artisticly rendered worlds.

Of the 10 games I found for ps3 that I thought might interest me, only 1, MLB "The Show" doesn't directly involve the player pressing buttons to punch/hit/kick etc a realistic humanoid character. And all of the fighting is realistically rendered and human(oid) on human(oid). Even Ratchet and Clank (playstations answer to mario) involves constantly shooting people to reach the objective.

Having been brought up on super mario brother and civilizations, and not being a "gun guy", I really have no interest in playing games where you physically fight your way to the goal. And the way you get to your goal, the way you win, is starkly different from computer to console.

While the computer hosts all sorts of different types of games and the games I like the most are strategy games. It shocked me to find that in the entire ps3 library of over 300+ different games I know of only 1 (Civilizations:revolution) that is a strategy title. 1 thinking games 2200 billion press the button to hit someone in the face inorder to win games.

Anyone who doesn't think modern console video games, even the non-shooters like lego batman, arnt training the brains of our kids that they need to punch, kick or shoot in order to win is fooling themselves.

Feed America=feed walmart?

Larger food banks no longer accept donations of food from individuals. This is because its a pain in the butt for them to inventory, package and store a multitude of small individually donated items. To their budget it makes more sense to let Walmart deal with warehousing the food and just go shopping with donated cash when you need inventory.

Large food banks, like Feed America, provide the majority of their services to the public school system. They supplement and often run the before and after school lunch programs. The intent of these programs is to provide additional food to kids whos working parents dobnt have the time to cook breakfast and dinner at home or take them to Mcdonalds.

So follow my logic train here. The government (and private doners) gives millions (billions) of dollars to food banks(*cough* middle men), which they spend at Walmart (and other large volume grocers) buying food to feed 10s of millions of American kids. Children who's parents cant afford to feed them or dont have the time to feed them because their wage is low and needs to be supplemented with the second job. A wage kept low by Walmart so its prices stay low and customers (the largest buyer of food being the government and/or private food banks) dont shop elsewhere.

Columbus Day is BS

Ya..been neglecting the blog this last month or two. Sorry. Here is a great article about Columbus day and all the lies and dishonest history it enforces.

I would recommend anyone interested in the true exploration of North America by non natives google the author Gavin Menzie. His books are like a treasure hunt for clues/evidence that you can actually visit and confirm.

Southpark premiere blew my mind

Great show in its 23123th season just keeps getting better. The new episode ran with the connection between God always watching us and how the NSA is always watching us. So Butters prays to the government to keep him safe..causes its watching us to keep us safe right? Same reason people pray to God..cause they expect God to step in when something bad happens. There is a joke there..but one wonders how different our expectations are of Government and of God. They seem to have similar roles as both are mostly called on to pull our butt out of a fire in an emergency and be ethereal whenever else. In order to calm hysteria about spying and privacy Butters turns the DMV into a confessional. Interesting thing confessionals. Wouldn't it be great if you could go to the government and PRIVATELY talk to someone about all your problems with the promise that they would stay secret and that you would be absolved of accountability (if you followed through with atonement assignment)? How many problems would this fix in our society? . Supposedly the government already knows about all you personal problems since they spy on you..there are just so many scofflaws and "criminals" out there they havnt gotten to you yet.Bad people no longer fear eternal damnation, they fear loosing their freedom. So why not go and talk with the jailer and since you were honest about it they wont follow up with the swat team or 70 consecutive life time sentences. We sort have stuck with our puritan roots regarding incarceration and punishment rather than reform and atonement and it clearly hasnt worked for us. I know..it only will be as good and benign as the people running it. But a serious idea to chew on from South Park.

Syria?

Forgetting for a moment the source of this article, it really is a great examination of the recent chemical attacks in Syria. Assad's military is winning quite handily and there is no reason for him to start using chemical weapons. While I dont share the author's opinion that the US is looking for excuses to invade another country in the middle east, I do think this attack is a honey pot left by either some Syrian militia or Russian agents who want to draw the US into the war.

Free food for the rich ?

I was talking with the Cuban refugee I work with the other day about what school is like in Cuba and he told me most kids go to school because that is where they get their meals. I guess they have a very "open" casual attendance program where you go to school when you want and leave when you want but most kids stay for the food. This was all in the context of how disappointing he was in the school food here. He said while it tasted fine the portions are so tiny compared to what they fed him at school in Cuba. One possible reason for that : The lunches in Florida schools are now free for every child. Now I am guessing the district is going to be saving money by not having to monitor who is on free/reduced lunch and that is why they are doing this. But if school lunch is free for everyone doesnt that mean more kids will want school lunch? How will an increase in demand and the loss of income from the families who could afford to pay change availability and portion size? Also being lost is the economic/responsibility lesson tied in with lunch money (and the bully aspect which comes with valuable life lessons of its own). Just food for thought.

Obama and Co are soo dishonest

Obama's head lawyers has been in the news for proposing changes to the sentencing laws so that people dont get ridiculous life sentences for minor drug arrests. This sounds great - but the reality is this is just talk..a politician blowing hot air - lying- to look like they are doing something when they are actually part of the problem. Obama has the power and authority to commute these so called unfair sentences and has used it less then any president before him. Less than Bush or Regan. He may say he wants to help people wrongly being fed into the for profit prison machine but his actions speak differently. This is spy on you, lock everyone up and do nothing about travon martin's shooter President. This is a president who sits on his thumbs and does nothing while dictators slaughter their own people.

Politicans talk a lot. Remember what he stands for in 2016. You are gonig to be ignoring my pleas to vote third party and the person you replace him with will be one of the croneys who also likes to break up families and promote the cycle of poverty by jailing 100's of thousands of Americans.

US and Middle East have the same problem

That problem being exclusive majority governments which refuse to work with the "minority" groups in their population. The governance of the domestic US has been completely paralyzed to the point of self destructive policies like the sequester because one ruling party would rather get nothing done than compromise with the other ruling party. This is no different than countries in the Middle East, like Iraq, Syria or Saudi Arabia where you have a Sunni or Shiite government who refuse to be inclusive of the other faction, at which point the left out faction starts blowing things. Egypt was alot like the US where the ruling party felt that the election gave it a mandate to exclude the opinions of everyone else. The Brotherhood and Republican Congress seems to feel like they were voted a crown, not a gavel. When we talk about supporting democracy, we are really talking about establishing majority rule since nothing about our "democratic system" really supports minority rights after the vote has been cast. To me..the solution seems to be decentralization of government, where you have established groups with equal voting power, which each represent a cultural group in the country. The more you spread out the choice, the less explosive the disagreements will be. When you force the population to choose between the lesser of two evils you are setting up a contest and encouraging conflict and confrontation.

"God Creep"

The evangelicals have given up on door to door proselytization and gone for a policy of assimilation. One example is Jeb Bush is pushing "education reform"..which is really just Christians trying to get control of the countries education system or at least defund public schools to the point where responsible parents have no choice but to send their kids to private christian schools with vouchers.

The Christians are playing the long game, slowly working their dogma into everyday life. And a by-product of this is that religious people are becoming more comfortable pushing their voodoo on others. Like this Judge who claims "The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ" I guess the State of Tennessee now dictates who the Messiah is? How does a person who "feels the Holy Spirit" so strongly get into government office? They pull it off because the Christians are slowly creeping, changing what normal looks like. Bat-Crazy has become nuanced and soon will be mainstream. Here is another Tennesee example though I saw this sorta game played by the Churches in Tulsa too. Churches drive into poor communities in a big truck full of food/clothes claiming to be providing social services..but you only get the goodies if you pray with them and accept Christ in your life.

Anyone paying attention yet ?

Update : A 2nd private email service says it cant do business in US. I really hope these are pebbles that start an avalanche of freedom...but the weak government our parents have left us wont be ready for it when the opportunity arrives.

This wonderful country took another swipe at Snowden a related businesses. This reminds me when the US government told Amazon to dump wiki links from its web servers and then told Paypal not to accept donations for Wikileaks.

“This experience has taught me one very important lesson: Without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.”

Its a rhetorical question as if people are going to do anything..if it doesnt directly affect Americans they dont budge. Not that we have any control at all over what the government chooses to do..is this the "change" you can believe in?

City of Tampa outlaws homelessness

Interesting story. The City of Tampa has passed a law outlawing sleeping in public places and I've got to side with the city on this one.

Once you’re out on the street, you’re done,” Todd explained. “It’s nearly impossible to get out of it.”Brian McLellan, a homeless man who has already been in jail several times for loitering and panhandling, confirmed what the others explained, that the only options for them are the Salvation Army or jail. “There is no affordable housing here, and there are no jobs for us,” he told the WSWS. “The police won’t talk to us about how to make things better. They just arrest us.”

I've seen first hand how homeless people cluster in parks and downtown areas and completely drive away any desire for "regular" people to shop, eat and do business there. And "homelessness" IMHO is a culture - most of the chronic homeless are choosing to be there and live that way. Some are truly stuck but the region built a whole new facility to help these people. The homeless dont like it because its not in the middle of the city where they can beg, barder fro drugs and hump in bushes. Allowing large groups of people to build makeshift settlements anywhere, even under overpasses is not the answer. You cant put them in section 8 housing because they will destroy the rooms. A jail like facility is the best option.

Living wage calculator

Mother Jones magazine put together handy calculator to determine whether the minimum wage job in your area pays a living wage. Basically there is no point in working a minimum wage job if you live anywhere near an urban area because your basic living expenses will exceed your income. Unfortunately people really dont have a choice since the social service net is as holey as swiss cheese. You cant depend on government support and you cant depend on goverment to force companies to offer a living wage. Recently Obama proposed a raise in the minimum wage to 9-something an hour. 9 dollars? 9$ is not anywhere near a living wage. The president argues that if he proposed anything hire the corporations would rebel, fire people, and raise prices and nothing would pass. Which just goes to show what a weak, terrible leader he really he. Walmart already tried this and The D.C. city council called their bluff. My biggest issue with this whole debate is the unfairness of wages. I'm sure the corporations know their businesses, know their customer and know costs. They are prob telling the truth that prices would go up. But they are saying that while paying their top executives millions of dollars a year. No one person "needs" a multi million dollar salary to survive. And we are talking about basic survival needs at the minimum wage level. We need a new minimum wage and a maximum wage and they should be tied together so that one is not grossly out of proportion to the other.

Joe's Song pick of the week : Lets Kick it up

Digimon was a well written cartoon that got totally smoked by Pokemon because it had multiple episode story arc while pokemon episodes (after the first season )were each a short stand alone story.

Stores love writers but hate artists

Why does 750 pieces of blank white copy paper cost $3 and I can get a 100 page notebook with lined paper for 49 cents, but 50 blank white copy paper in a note book for drawing costs $14?Why are notebooks for drawing so many times more expensive than notebooks for writing?

Also...since when are skateboards like $150+??? I've been going around looking for a cheap skateboard and the only skateboard under 60$ is a crappy walmart board with plastic barrings. When did skating boarding become a sport for the wealthly where the boards are about the logos not the usability?

Spanish Language Channel tops TV ratings

Spanish language cable station Univision has outperformed all english language cable stations this month in the rating. I've watched Univsion programing and while funky..its basically hyper-Fox style sex and craziness. This victory isnt about quality of programing IMHO. Its about socioeconomic reality of who still uses TV as a major form of entertainment. White rich people who watch TV arnt being counted by networks because they are getting their TV from various internet distributors like Hulu or have abandoned TV entirely for new media. Latinos, who in America tend to be more poor and working class with less education and exposure to technology are still wedded to the old ball and chain. This also may account for why Latinos are now leading in another American statistic - Obesity.

Gov accuses Gallup polling of false claims

I never in my life have been polled by any media, whether by "poffesional" pollsters or just the TV news, nor ever seen evidence anyone going around polling people. Ive often wondered how/where these poll companies get their data and still manage to completely miss me and stay off my radar. Apparently the Justice Dept. would like to know as well.

Lets leave slavery up to the States too

I really hate sounding like fox news but...weakest president ever! Obama keeps punting..whether its kids shot in schools, kids shot in Syria or just one kid shot in Florida. Lets leave justice for Trayvon up to the Florida justice system >? Really? you thought that was a satisfactory answer? Jeez. The man does nothing. Talk is cheap Obama..what happened to "change we could believe in" ?

Jimmy Kimmel's "You're Screwed"

"So your saying my generation faces the iminant prosepct of a bleak and potentially apocalyptic future?" Great line..so true through..people should read Dan Brown's book "Inferno"

Do people forget that Jesus lost and died a horrible death?

I was set on another mental birdwalk today while listening to the radio.  When we tell our kids to live your life like Jesus did are we saying we want them to be social revolutionaries who give up their regular lives to challenge the most power empire in the world and lose? While small parts of his story would be cooped into a world religion, Jesus lost his fight against the Roman occupation of Israel (and the decadent culture they brought with them) and he died quite horribly for it. What parent thinks to themselves "I want to give my kids values that lead to them being force marched through the streets and crucified by the government?" This led me to wonder as long as we are tell our children to live meaningful lives, should we be teaching our kids to be more like Osama Bin Laden rather than Jesus. Osama also led a revolution to oust a foreign invader and their foreign culture from his country. Imagine if Saudi Arabia wanted to create enclaves of armed soldiers in the US that were governed by Saudi not US law, and the US government just gave away whole parts of cities to Saudi Arabia to make this happen. Very few if any Americans, especially the Americans who had their land taken, would just stand idly by and let that happen without armed revolt...so honestly if you were counseling your children on how to react - would you tell them to fight like Jesus and MLK? OR like Osama? All 3 died..but while Jesus and MLK peaceful demonstration just led more praceful demonstration and endless debate - I'm pretty sure no one will be building foreign bases in a Muslim county any time soon.

Jesus wanted accountability

I heard a great line on NRP this morning. "If you know nothing about Jesus of Nazareth other than he was crucified by the Romans - that is all you need to know; Crucifixion was an unusual punishment saved for those who spoke out against the government. The authorities didnt cared about this guy until after he challenged the money changers at the Temple, who were the local symbol of Roman Imperial Governance and Power. "

What does the Heman/She-RA Xmas special teach?

"So what does The He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special teach us?
• If your birthday is near Christmas, you're only getting one party and one set of presents, even if you're born on a completely pagan planet like Eternia.
• If you're a kid and your parents allow you to go into the woods, unsupervised, to cut down your own Christmas tree, it's because they hate you.
• Getting into a stranger's van? Bad. Getting into a stranger's spaceship? Totally fine.
• Alien cultures are probably not going to be that excited to hear about Jesus.
• If there's a creature called a Beast Monster on your planet, it's because someone, somewhere, did not give a shit.
• Transformers are the toys of Satan. Buy only Masters of the Universe action figures from Mattel, kids!
• Do not let foreign people compose Christmas songs. It never ends well.
• You will do a lot of unusual things if someone is licking you.
• Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, you still have the Christmas spirit in you, TAKE THAT, JEWS.
• The fact that the original draft of this review was 3000 words means that I care far, far more about the He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special than any sane person ever should."

Boarding school students burned alive and shot

The Islamic group Boko Haram whose name means “Western education is sacrilege.” claimed responsibility for killing a bunch of kids today.

I dont understand why when we were "nation building" in Iraq and Afganastan we didnt address the culture of crazy religion in those countries. The modern world needs to go into places like Nigeria or Texas with crazy religious beliefs and  take control of the message. Dismantle the temples to gods of hate. They are more then welcome to be Islamic. But until they can handle it without going off the rails they need to be hearing it from world religious body not the local shaman with no teeth. Lets abolish the UN..because really what does it do anymore and create a a governing body of world religion that sends in holy men and builds temples and provides services.

Joe's music PotW: Land of Anaka

Haunting tribute to Africa by Ugandan-in-exile Geoffrey Oryema

Does the State Dept ever tell the truth?

John Kerry was spotted chilling on his mega-yacht by members of the press during the recent Egyption coup. When asked why the Seceratry of State was on holiday during a crisis (reminiscent of the president of BP during the gul oil spill) the State dept deliberately misled the press and said he was hard at work.

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said. “He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

Then the pictures started showing up.

Maybe the guy was working from his yacht or whatever..but the first choice was to be dishonest. Kerry, Edwards, Clinton, Obama. Not a single one of the democrat inner circle has a word you can trust. Bill Clinton set the bar for honesty and transparency with this group and water seeks its own level. Bill Clinton should have been arrested for lying under oath and Hilary, who continues to cover for him, shouldnt ever hold high office that requires integrity. I'm' sorry for the women of the world but Hilary is not an answer for 2016

Lightning give Vinnie 33 Mil; tell him to play elsewhere

Vinnie Lecavalier: Team Leader, Playmaker, Fan Favorite. Unwanted. HUH>? WTF I get that the team wants more flexibility given the salary cap..but what business can just give away 33 million dollars to someone who isnt playing for them anymore? And why?  Vinnie is one of the very few superstar players who is actually worth tons of money because hes not only a good scores but also a play maker who thinks on the ice.

33 million dollars is 1/3 of the annual budget for entire Tampa area school district. All that money basically thrown away to pay to Vinnie just to leave the team. He could sit on his butt and do nothing if he wanted to or sort crack off hookers. Rich keep getting richer doing nothing while everyone else works for measly 30 grand a year. We need a good old Russian style decapitation of the bourgeois..these oligarchs arnt giving the money up and its not going to "trickle down".

Living wage at Costco?

Here is the math. Stating wage there is $11/hr. Much better than 7$ fed minimum. 50% of Costco workers are part time. I would argue the concept of a "part time " worker is just a corporate gimmick to avoid giving this people benefits, since a large number of the part time workers need all the hours they can get and end up taking as many hours or more than a full time. But they are suppose to be part time so let say they work 30 hours and end up with 1400 at the end of the month before taxes and fees. My research has found that if you want a basic apartment and you dont get any asstiance (wait list for section 8 is 2 year and counting) you are going to pay 800/month and another 100 for water/power/garbage. Lat leaves barely 600 bucks a month for food/entertainment. On top of that Americans need a car to get to work so there is gas, insurance and a car payment to pay, unless they find a bus route that goes to Costco, which is rare because Costco are not in the same areas low costs apartments tend to be.And forget about saving any money for a rain day. This really doesnt seem to be a sustainable wage in this economy unless you are leaning heavily of public assistance. And if you have other mouths to feed you are totally screwed.

Meanwhile the white collar executives get 4-8x an hourly employees yearly salary PER MONTH. A man can work an entire year and not make what another makes in a month of work. It just seems wrong. Especiall for one of the most profitable corprotations in america. Yes they are better than walmart. They are very good at making that point. But that doesnt make the unbalanced division of profits reasonable. Who sets their goal at beating the absolute worst? I've worked in the warehouses and I've worked in the corporate office. The warehouse workers work a lot harder more demanding jobs, both physically and socially dealing with members. Yet the meaningful, enough to better yourself living wage salaries go people with a desk job.

Why do billion dollar sports programs need handouts?

The country of Brazil has seen some mass protest of late. The government raised the cost of bus tickets, which poor Brazilians use to get to work, while spending tens of billions of dollars on Stadiums for the the upcoming World Cup and Olympics. There is a running joke in Rio that goes "if your child is sick take them to a stadium". To the working poor, it appeared the Brazillian government was putting the needs of FIFA and foreign tourists above the needs of Brazilian citizens who need schools and hospitals and buses none of which get the sort of funding and handholding these stadiums are.

Here in Jacksonville, we have a very similar scenario going down. The city has pledged 43 million dollars to build "The worlds largest scoreboard" for the Jacksonville Jaguars football stadium. Included in the taxpayer funded renovations is a swimmingpool so people can swim and watch football at the same time. Meanwhile the city is closing a community center and 6 libraries  and limiting park hours and well as shuttering a few fire stations. Many schools outside the affluent parts of town are unfit for human habitation.

Now sports do bring with them an economy of their own. They certainly do inject value into the community as well as giving something for the citizens to unite behind. But these industries make millions and billions of dollars. Why do they need handouts when not for profit services like education and healthcare are totally underfunded. How out of touch do you need to be as a politician to promote welfare programs for billion dollar private businesses? Why doesnt the city build a free swimming pool for my business?

Joe's Movie Reviews : Man of Steel

Thumbs down. The visual effects are awesome; the work they put into creating a living breathing world of Krypton was fantastic. If they had made the entire movie about the events on Krypton leading up to baby superman being sent into space they would have had a truly awesome flick. Sadly the krypton scenes are only the first 15 minutes of the film. After that we are on Earth and the director largely drops the sweeping landscapes shots for intimate zoom ins on the characters like he did in 300. This movie can be broken down into two core scene types - big action sequences and zoom ins on emotional reaction to whatever was going on by the characters. With the exception of Russel Crow, none of the actors/actresses seemed to be able to pull these emotional scenes off at all with any sense of flow or build up. The guy playing Zod was particularly mechanical and awkward with his angry outbursts. The superman character had very little actual dialog and spent most of the movie seemingly trying to find places to pose for the camera. It was also a very violent movie. Several people get their necks twisted and broken by super-people, and I felt those scenes were disturbing and over the top. Superhero movies, and Superman in particular are suppose to be inclusive of young audiences and I was uncomfortable with the level of realistic violence and death in this film. Especially the neck breaking.

Oh what a tangled web

"Information about the usage of chemical weapons by Assad is fabricated in the same way as the lie about [Saddam] Hussein's weapons of mass destruction [in Iraq]," Alexei Pushkov, head of the Russian lower house of parliament's international affairs committee, said on Twitter, according to RIA Novosti. -CNN

In order to protect the integrity of our republic we need an amendment to the constitution that prohibits politicians from using partisan data or disputed "facts".

Quotes

At a certain stage the realization strikes through that one must either live outside of society's bonds or die of absolute boredom. There is no future or freedom in the circumscribed life and the only other life is complete rejection of the rules. There is no longer room for the soldier of fortune or the gentleman adventurer who can live both within and outside of society. Today it is all or nothing. To save my own sanity I chose the nothing.
