Harry Potter : Deathly Hollows 1 review

Bottom Line : If you went hoping to see the mysterious and magical world of Harry Potter, you left disappointed. If you went to see a twilight-esk romance/relationship story between 3 friends, you left disappointed. If you went with kids you left after the first 15 minutes. Click below for more details

This latest installment of harry potter is 2 hours of harry and friends camping in or running through various bleak natural landscapes broken up by several very short intense action "shock" scenes where the director proclaims this isnt a kids movie. In the last 15 minutes harry finds out about 3 powerful articfacts, aka the deathly hallows, 2 of which he already had.

The previous movies had a forumla and say what you want about formulas - it worked. This movie had no "wizarding world scenes", no new characters to introduce or any to enjoy beyond the 3 friends, no real mystery except at the very very end that played no role in the movie itself. I go to a harry potter move to see the complex magical world mixed with great character development and a mystery attached. Didnt get it. For those that cared about the relationships - nothing happen. At one point they were sleeping on camping cots and their fingers were close to eachother - and of course that got its own "couldnt be more obvious" zoom in. The actors all have 12 o clock shadows which make them look like creepy uncles - but apparently cant get even get to 1st base with Harmonie regardless of the fact they are camping the whole movie and everyone knows what happens at camp. The action scenes they threw in to break up the monotony didnt cut it either. It was overly apparent that the director was trying to frame scenes that were meant to shock people. Excess blood, excess giant Snake, excess minor characters dying. These events while at times scary or startling came off as artificial. Why it is that three supposedly well trained wizard need to run away from everything? They even fail at running away from poachers and get caught. How it is that the supposedly powerful harry potter gets beaten up and captured by woodsy thugs?  Which bring up another problem with this movie - its endless stream of cameos. I honestly think there is something in certain actors contracts that they must be in all the movies. There are several extremely short scenes where former characters show up and effectively do nothing. It just adds to the feeling that the whole movie is vignettes stuck into to break up the bleak camping.

Anyhoo definitely wait for the dvd on this one.

Quotes

At a certain stage the realization strikes through that one must either live outside of society's bonds or die of absolute boredom. There is no future or freedom in the circumscribed life and the only other life is complete rejection of the rules. There is no longer room for the soldier of fortune or the gentleman adventurer who can live both within and outside of society. Today it is all or nothing. To save my own sanity I chose the nothing.
