Nostalgie de la boue

Nostalgie de la boue is a term I heard on NPR today. It's french for "Nostalgia for the mud".
NPR would have you believe its the "new kool"; a trendy movement behind things like organic food and Green living. I would say its been around much longer and by its nature doesn't get much attention. The Amish practice it as do many American militia members. For me its about living as close as possible to ordinary so one can greater appreciate the extraordinary. Its about providing perspective in a world that grows more complicated and chaotic by the minute. A world full of masks and untruths. Good and bad BS. My generation has spent like 100 times as much time in books, Tv and the internet then any before it. I can honestly say I've have considerable memories and histories living in other artificial worlds. Some might say living in a fantasy is unhealthy. I would argue living in fantasy makes reality more tangible. The location with the best perspective regarding light and dark is not in the middle at gray. In gray you are wondering who and what you are. You can be lost in gray. Only close to black do you know you are not white and vise versa.

I certainly dont want to escape our modern world. We are lucky to live in interesting times where knowledge and progress is growing exponentially. BUT. In a complicated world, moving towards the simple, the "real", will grant you better perspective on who and what you are in the complicated part that sometimes feels like a giant freight train of craziness.

Quotes

At a certain stage the realization strikes through that one must either live outside of society's bonds or die of absolute boredom. There is no future or freedom in the circumscribed life and the only other life is complete rejection of the rules. There is no longer room for the soldier of fortune or the gentleman adventurer who can live both within and outside of society. Today it is all or nothing. To save my own sanity I chose the nothing.
