Romney's gaffe

Back in May, Mitt Romney said a bunch of politically incorrect things to a group of people at a fundraising dinner in Florida. He was pointing out the goal posts to his audience by saying that a large portion of Americans feel its the governments job to provide handups/handouts and these people will never vote for Republicans.

Click below for the rest:

Romney is correct is saying that there are a lot of lazy people looking for free handouts. 47% of the ~300 million Americans is an exaggeration, but there are a ton of folks that are fine with living off public assistance and have no ambitions beyond that. And trust me - these people for the most part arnt wonder snowflakes of uniqueness that the world cant live without. The problem is what do we do about it. Cutting them off is not the answer. Depriving them of basic healthcare, food ect is going to casue way more expensive problems than feeding, clothing and housing them. American will start to look like India with pockets of wealth mixed in with disease(of the body and the soul) ridden slums. And there are plenty of redeemable souls that will be lost.

The Republican message is an unchristian one. Jesus understood that you cant just live in your fancy Jewish condo..I mean temple.. and forget about the rest of the world. The other side of Romney's statement suggests there are a lot of people in this country who feel the world beyond their front door doesn't effect them. They are too wrapped up in their own things, and too attached to them, to risk adopting other peoples problems. These people arnt evil; they are a product of this consumption driven society. As for the government is wasteful and not worth ym tax dollars - well if you choose a government job instead of a for profit one maybe it would be a little less wasteful. We the people have abandoned our stewardship of government to the less success driven more ideologically motivated worker.  And you reap what you sow.

Governments purpose is promote the freedom of its citizens by maintaining order, which allows for them to do whatever they want within the bounds of society. That means providing full basic support both so every citizen can utilized said freedoms and also to protect us from being murdered for bread or dying from disease spread by unmanaged poverty.

Romney is right in that there are a whole bunch of people who are unmotivated to work. But he's ideologically going over a cliff to think the problem will be solved by defunding social welfare and turning our backs on it.

Quotes

At a certain stage the realization strikes through that one must either live outside of society's bonds or die of absolute boredom. There is no future or freedom in the circumscribed life and the only other life is complete rejection of the rules. There is no longer room for the soldier of fortune or the gentleman adventurer who can live both within and outside of society. Today it is all or nothing. To save my own sanity I chose the nothing.
