I'm a big fan of contraception. Frankly I feel people who choose to have a child of their own instead of adopting one of the thousands of starving uneducated kids living in filth out there in the world are making a selfish choice (Being adopted permits me to have high horsed opinions like that btw) The Federal Deptartment of Health and Human services director Kathleen Sebelius (who has a degree in public manangement not medicine or science) recently vetoed plans by the FDA to allow Plan B, "the morning after bill", to be sold over the counter. Obama supported this decision
“The reason Kathleen made this decision is that she could not be confident that a 10-year-old or an 11-year-old going into a drugstore, should be able — alongside bubble gum and batteries — be able to buy a medication that potentially, if not used properly, could end up having an adverse effect.”
Others did not.

I see this as another example of Obama's dishonesty. If he came out and said many people in the US appose contraception so we are killing this to appease them I might understand if not approve. But he didnt say that. As the quote above displays, he came up with the most ubsurd reasoning that I am 100% certain even he didnt believe. He lied (again) and disrepected his audience with complete hyperbole. 11yos buying this next to the gum and batteries? Really? Lets look at the facts :
1) Plan B isnt RU486. It is just a higher dose of the regular birth control bill, which is made of hormones that occur naturally in a women's body. It doesn't cause abortions, just inhibits the eggs from going where the sperm go.
2) Unlike gum and batteries a child could ingest $500 worth and be fine if a bit hormonal. If a child buy and ingests $50 bucks worth of Tylenol or other drugs commonly available without a prescription they would be dead.
3) A single pill costs 50 bucks. Most 11yos dont carry that much money, nor do they wander around drugstores looking for expensive medications to buy.
4) Contraceptives are not kept with gum and batteries. Even little kids can tell the differnce between the candy and the condom section of the store.
5) Emergency Contraception is for - wait for it - Emergencies!. Like at 3 am when you cant get a doctors prescription. Plan B will only work up to 3 days after sex. An 11yo who needs emergency contraception isnt likely to ask a doctor for a prescription and if its to be effective they need to get it quickly.
6)Even if we limit ago to say 15 how is a 15yo going to prove their age?
7) If, in order to sell a product over the counter a durg needs to be tested at all age groups no sex related drugs will ever be approved. How many parents do you think willingly will sign their 10 or 11yo daughter up as a test subject for emergency contraception?
8) If the standard for availability of medication without a prescription is "Can a 10yo be trusted to by and use it unsupervised" then NO medication should be sold without a prescription since no parent worth their salt would allow a child to use Tylenol or laxatives or sleep aids unsupervised either.
Obama doesnt respect his audience enough to be honest. I'd rather have a leader who completely disagrees with my positions but is honest and transparent about it than one that hides or distracts from the truth or says what he thinks I want to hear.
