Canada ends funding of Canadian "peace corps"
Wrong direction Canada..totally wrong direction. If you dont expose people to volunteerism early on they'll be too introverted and busy buying expensive homes and lattes to bother volunteering when they are older.
Wa Governor circumvents legal system to protect pension
Hmm..been through something similar myself.
"After nearly seven years of going through all of our state's court systems and prevailing on every single level, I still lose in the end, making me really question our judicial system and who it protects and benefits," Harvey "Al" Anthis' widow, Bonnie, said in an email to the Herald.

Wa. School pays teacher $430,000 to resign
This is cheaper than letting him sue?
The district fired him in 2009 for alleged acts of misconduct, including verbal abuse to students and refusal to help struggling students. As part of the settlement, the district agreed to give him a letter stating that he’d done a satisfactory job as a teacher there, Lacy said.

Many north Florida public school still paddle students
Via NPR, corporal punishment is still alive and well in North Florida.
But Joe! Isnt hitting children wrong? No. There are many people who need/benefit from CONSISTENT physical consequences as a part of learning self control. Florida seems to have gone to great lengths to make sure the procedure for this sort of discipline is clearly laid out. As long as the rules are followed and there is a 2nd adult involved as a check on the authority calling for the paddling - I say we need more of this. Coarse I also feel we should bring back duels, canings and more dealth penalties to help correct the behavior of adults. Shrug.

Bremerton shooting update
The 9yo who brought a gun to school which discharged and hit a classmate will get probation and write an apology letter. He will also testify against his mother and her boyfriend relating to the gun they werent allowed to have because they are felons. The police have apparently misplaced them.
Looks like a good ending for the kid at least. Hopefully the little girl will survive and recover quickly. Update 2: The boy claims he brought the gun to school for protection against bullies when his teacher and principle didn't listen to his requests for help. The bullies were suspended earlier in the year for hurting him so it looks like the kid was only acting in self defense. Idiot DSHS and idiot teachers in this story..both I'm sure cant be fired or held accountable.

Quotes
At a certain stage the realization strikes through that one must either live outside of society's bonds or die of absolute boredom. There is no future or freedom in the circumscribed life and the only other life is complete rejection of the rules. There is no longer room for the soldier of fortune or the gentleman adventurer who can live both within and outside of society. Today it is all or nothing. To save my own sanity I chose the nothing.
